Bathroom Safety
The bathroom holds two of the most common causes of death amongst children, drowning and burns, both due to the water used in this area.
• Before placing a child into a bath or getting into the bath yourself, test the temperature of the water by moving your hand rapidly through the water for several seconds. if the water temperature feels uncomfortable to your hand, it is too hot for a child. The temperature should never exceed 40º Celcius for a young child and the maximum recommended temperature for babies is 37º Celcius.
• Never leave a child alone in any room, especially in the bathroom. If you must leave the room, take them with you.
• Keep the bathroom door closed to prevent small children entering alone.
• Use extreme caution when bathing a young child in a basin. Many basins have single lever taps, which are easy for small children to turn on.
