Help Save Your Home From A Bush Fire! 

General Bushfire Maintenance

 

  • Clear all gutters of leaves and debris on a regular basis.
  • Clear all ground fuels (long dry grass/dead leaves/timber etc).
  • Ensure roofing material is secure to prevent fire entry.
  • Installation of metal screens and shutters is good fire protection.
  • Screen any loose vents or openings with wire mesh.
  • Regularly check fire fighting pumps, if applicable.
  • Have both a short and long ladder available for extinguishing fires.
  • Have a battery operated radio and torch in case of electrical failure.

Preparation for a Bush Fire

  • Create fire breaks (eg. cut lawn short).
  • Invest in some heavy duty hoses, if possible.
  • Ensure hoses are long enough to reach all side of the property.
  • Locate sprinklers in strategic posistions around the home.
  • Have reserve water supplies from swimming pool, tank, dam.
  • Remove all flammable items.
  • Vent all LPG gas tanks away from the house.

Immediately before the Bush Fire Hits

  • Wear full length clothing of natural materials.
  • Wear strong shoes, have a face mask and eye protection available.
  • Hose down exterior of the home and surrounding buildings.
  • Block downpipes and fill gutters with water.
  • Fill baths, basins and buckets with water.
  • Close doors and cover gaps with wet towels.
