Living Skills Enhancement Retreat for Young Adult Burn Survivors
Therapeutic recreational camps have long been accepted to have an incredibly positive effect for individuals with disabilities or differences. There are many such camps around the world designed specifically for burn survivors. The aim of such camps is to enhance and improve individual self-esteem, enhance life skills and coping strategies by using both clinical and peer group support. This leads to the development of a sense of community, acceptance, belonging and coping skills.
“After camp what do we do?"
This is the question many young adult burn survivors ask. At 18 - 25 years of age they can feel too old to attend the camp with the "kids", but are not ready for the adult world of "old" burn survivors.
Young adult burn survivors face unique issues during the transition phase of development to adulthood. They are often acutely aware that the issues they now have differ substantially from those that they had as a young child. These new issues typically relate to body image, relationships and career development, leaving a young adult feeling confused in a world in which they may find it hard to find acceptance. It is essential for them to clear up this confusion and make sense of it, so that they can plan their future direction with a meaning and purpose.
Young adult burn survivor retreats have been developed by the Peter Hughes Burn Foundation to assist in fulfilling these needs.
This empowering three-day weekend revolves around self-discovery and provides a venue where participants can:
• Talk openly and honestly about the issues surrounding their lives after a burn injury.
• Learn to develop a new understanding of their true abilities and capabilities
• Identify their potential and find ways to fully develop their strengths.
• Participate in group discussions regarding effective coping skills and self-esteem, leading to self-acceptance.
• Provide support to others through peer group support network.
Through popular demand we have extended this program and now also run retreats for Adult Burn Survivors of all ages.
